报告摘要：
It is widely recognized that total fertility rates (TFR) continuously slides down and varies across space over the past several decades. Based on the motivated evidence, this paper proposes a spatial economics model comprising a set of two asymmetrical regions to investigate the links between economic agglomeration and fertility behavior. Additionally, individual with heterogeneous preferences of fertility are incorporated to debunk the decline in TFR as sorting effects. The rigorous general equilibrium analysis conducted here shows that agglomeration effects together with sorting effects form a mechanism endogenously lead to the variation of TFR. We show that the share of economic activities in the larger region evolves in an inverted U-pattern when transport costs decline, whereas TFR in the larger region endogenously shows a U-shape during regional integration.

汪健，男，安徽青阳人，日本立命馆大学经济学博士，现为上海大学悉尼工商学院经济金融系副教授，硕士生导师。主要从事空间经济学和环境经济学的教学和研究工作。主持国家自然科学基金青年基金一项，已在The Annals of Regional Science、Review of Urban and Regional Development Studies、Energy Policy、Energy Efficiency 等期刊发表多篇英文论文。出版英文专著一部《Economic Analysis of Industrial Agglomeration》. 2018. Springer。
