Are the cultures of the greater East Asian region different or similar? Can there be a greater sense of cultural affinity and community amongst the nations there? Can cultural bridges and linkages lead to greater trust and harmony in relations amongst nations? This seminar attempts to explore some of these questions and ideas by focusing on the Southeast Asian region, where there is a plurality of nations with unique historical circumstances but also similar values and common sociocultural experiences. Several selected Southeast Asian countries will be analyzed to some extent. There will also be some discussion on the Southeast Asian institution called ASEAN in which attempts to forge a stronger sense of regionalism and integration on a cultural basis have been launched. Many Southeast Asian leaders espouse certain values that are common to the greater region and suggest a core area of commonality despite differences in appearance. The countries in Southeast Asia also have large communities of people of ethnic Chinese descent. As such, there will also be some discourse on this area of interest. Ultimately, this seminar will look at the overarching subject in terms of its relevance to China as a prominent stakeholder to consider the potential merits of a greater sense of East Asian solidarity by building stronger cultural bridges which can translate into greater mutual understanding and deeper partnerships. Themes such as diversity, identity, and institutionalism will be salient in this seminar. Tangential discussions on topics pertaining to other areas of the world are also expected and welcomed.
