摘要：
Whether bank competition can be a driver of innovation and quality upgrading? We develop a model of international trade with bank sector and quality upgrading pace, and show theoretically how bank competition affects the rate at which they upgrade product quality. Our analysis uses highly disaggregated data covering exports across 10,000 products to the United States and comprehensive information on banks financial statements, ratings and intelligence from 56 countries to measure export quality upgrading and bank competition indicators. As predicted by our models, we find that higher bank competition is associated with export quality upgrading, especially for those products distant to the world quality frontier. Our results are robust to various model specifications and estimation methods. The paper provides new, systematic evidence that developing countries benefit more from bank competition. The main policy implication to be drawn is that the success of reforms aimed at enhancing the competition and efficiency of banking markets play an important role in the process of export transformation in developing countries.
